Investment
Opportunities
in
the
Mining
Substantial investment opportunities exist in the
Republic of Yemen. The government is fully committed to
supporting investment. Investment in Yemen is
considered favorable due to liberal investment laws, tax
free zones, tax holidays, low wages, strategic location
close to major shipping routes, and an active local
market.
Due to Yemen’s strategic position, investors are able
to easily base their operations in Yemen to enter
neighboring markets. Imports and exports are
facilitated to the east and the west via the Aden and
Hodeidah seaports.
Yemen’s coastline stretches over 2,500 kilometers and
includes the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea.
Infrastructure within Yemen has seen notable progress in
the last ten years. There have been substantial
improvements to the airports, sea ports and roads.
All have been developed and improved to link
businesses and people domestically and internationally.
Yemen is rich in high value mineral resources including
gold, silver, platinum, iron, zinc, lead, nickel,
copper, cobalt, titanium, and industrial minerals such
as limestone, zeolite, gypsum, silica sand, feldspar,
pumice, perlite, granite, marble, travertine, basalt,
tuff and ignimbrite. The government seeks to develop
Yemen’s mineral resources as a means to stimulating
employment and economic development. Mineral
exploration, development and mining are governed by
Republican Law No. 24, enacted in 2004. Minerals are
owned by the state and as such may only be exploited by
a company holding a permit issued by the Government.
The Government encourages the private sector to explore
and develop mineral resources.
Metallic
Minerals
The
regional geological setting and gold metallogeny of the
Arabian-Nubian Shield highlights opportunities for gold
exploration in Yemen. The Shield is an Upper Proterozoic
accretion of intra-oceanic island arcs consisting of
volcano-sedimentary deposits piling on sub ducting
oceanic crust. The meta-volcanic and metasedimentary
rock belts in Yemen are the southern extensions of the
comparable volcano-sedimentary sequences in Saudi
Arabia, and both parts represent the Arabian-Nubian
Shield east of the Red Sea. Similar belts extend from
Egypt through Sudan and Ethiopia.
