Yemen participates in the PDAC exhibition for the
first time
PDAC March 2009
Yemen participated in the PDAC 2009 through Yemen
Geological Survey that gives details of the
promising geology in Yemen and showed that Yemen has
an unique geological setting with many promising
targets for mineral exploration.
Yemen is undergoing a modernisation of the country’s
mining sector. Over the last couple of years,
through several IFC/World Bank projects, the mining
laws, and other relevant Acts, have been reviewed to
make Yemen attractive for the international mining
industry. The upgraded mining law is expected to
pass through Parliament within a couple of months
and the country is preparing in other ways for the
future development of the mining sector.
Yemen Geological Survey has improved access to all
geological data through the construction of a modern
web-based database giving access to all reports,
maps, and mineral occurrences in the country, thus
at the same time making it much easier for
interested companies around the world to get to know
the potential of Yemen’s geology.
Yemen has in co-operation with the IFC/World Bank
carried out several projects in relation to the
development of the country’s mining sector, such as
a Mining Policy Reform and a Mineral Promotion
Programme. The reformed mining law will reflect
international best practice approaches that should
appeal to both local and foreign investors.
Its key objectives are transparency, efficiency,
regulatory accountability, and achieving a balanced
approach between government oversight and investor
prerogative.
This means Yemen has transferred from exploration to
mining stage. Sixteen mining companies are active in
Yemen already, from e.g. Canada, Belgium, Britain,
Australia, Turkey, India and China. The government
of Yemen is actively encouraging this development
and it was an important turning point when the
founding stone for the first modern zinc mine was
laid just last month by the Prime Minister. It
should also be remembered that Yemen has known
mining since antiquity and that a reliable work
force is available.
Visit by his Excellency, ambassador to Canada Mr.
Khalid Bahah visit the PDAC2009
The Ambassador was formerly the Minister of Oil and
Minerals in Yemen and has encouraged this
development and he visits the Yemeni booth. He hopes
that the future will bring fruitful cooperation
between Canadian companies and Yemen, thus
strengthening the ties to the very successful mining
country Canada.

The
Board implemented several activities through 2005
represented by:
------------------------------------------------------------
• The Board transferred to it's permanent building
at Zubery Street.
• Participating in the Mineral Investment Horizons
and Opportunities in the Arab Countries Symposium,
Jeddah-Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during 5-7 March 2005.
The Board participated in this symposium by
four papers these papers are:
• Reality of the discovery and investment in
the mining sector in Yemen.
• Investment opportunities available in the
mineral sector in Yemen.
• Factors affecting the attraction of the mining
investments and future of the mining sector development.
• Legislation and laws regulating the exploration
and utilization of the mineral resources in Yemen.
• Organized the ninth expanded technical meeting
at the end of April 2005.
• Holding a workshop about ornament and building
stones co-ordinating between Board and German side
represented by the mining museum and practical science
university in (Bochum ) Germany.
• Holding a workshop about the reduction of
poverty in September 2005 with coordination of ministry
of oil and minerals and ministry of international
plannings cooperation .
• Holding a workshop in cooperation of world
bank (IFC) to discuss the importance of the mineral
sector in Yemen.
• His Excellency the vice president of the republic
visited the Board on 7 December 2005 to know the activities
that are implemented by the Board and directed the
government to support the mineral sector in Yemen.
• Sinying with primery letters the agreement
between the Bored & Zinc ox company to exploite
the mine in Jabali area for Zinc leads silver
The expected works through 2006:
• Participating in the international conference
of the mineral investment in South Africa which will
be held in captwon at the beginning of February 2006.
The interested companies in the mineral sector will
attend this conference.
• Participating in the negotiations with the
Chinese side about the project of railway between
Al Goff, Marib and Shabwah to transfer the ore minerals
from these governorates to the a of Arabian Sea.
• Participating in the ninth Arabic conference
of the Mineral Resources which will be held in Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia. The Board will participate by many
papers in additional to its participation in preparation
committee of the conference, because the eighth conference
was held in Yemen in 2003.
• Participating in the sixth international conference
of geology of Middle East which will hold in"
Al Ayen" -United Arab Emirates through 20-23
march 2006. This conference is considered the largest
geologic demonstration in the region since 1979 and
the Board will participate by two papers about the
geology of Yemen and the Gold belt in the north area.
• Participating in the International Gulf Forum
of Earthquake which will be held in Masqat city capital
of sultanate of Oman through 19-22 February 2006

IFC supports first Cement plant in Eastern Yemen
Sana'a/Washington D.C., June 30, 2007-IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, has signed an agreement with Arabian Yemen Cement Company Limited that will help generate employment in one of the Republic of Yemen's least developed regions. IFC will provide a $70 million loan for its own account and mobilize an additional $55 million from participant banks to build the first cement plant in eastern Yemen.
The greenfield cement plant will be located near Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout Governorate. It will use state-of-the-art, energy-efficient technology and have a capacity of 1.54 million tons per year. The project is expected to substitute for imports by producing comparable locally.
Engineer Abdullah Bugshan, Chairman of Arabian Yemen Cement Company, said "as it is difficult to obtain long-term financing for such a large project in Yemen, IFC's support is a critical component of this project. IFC has also been instrumental in providing advice on the technical, environmental, and social aspects of the project."

Dinosaur
in Yemen

The dinosaur record of the Arabian Peninsula is extremely
limited. Here we present a dinosaur tracksite from the
Republic of Yemen, representing the first dinosaur
trackways reported so far from Arabia.
The tracksite is in limestones of the Amran Group, which is
widely distributed and exposed throughout Yemen. Several
studies have discussed the stratigraphic position,
depositional environment and fossil content of the Amran
Group; the unit is considered to be of Late Jurassic to
earliest Cretaceous age.

Dinosaur tracks were discovered in 2004 in the Serwah area,
Madar village, 47 km north of Sana’a. Only one trackway
was recognized during preliminary fieldwork. In December
2006, more extensive fieldwork and prospecting at the
same site resulted in the discovery of two more bipedal
and eleven parallel quadrupedal dinosaur trackways. All
trackways were cleaned, measured, photographed, and
tracings were made of the better-preserved tracks.
More trackways were recognized at Madar village, with some
trackways winding etween the houses. At Bait Al-Washer
village to the east of Madar one bipedal and one
quadrupedal trackway were recognized. This, together
with the wide distribution of the Amran Group suggests
that the area still holds the potential for many
additional discoveries.

An initial analysis of trackway proportions, shape of digits,
digital extremities, curvature of digits, width of
digits and hallux impression indicates that the bipedal
trackway discovered in 2003 was made by an ornithopod;
the quadrupedal trackways can be confidently assigned to
sauropods
