Geological Survey & Mineral Resources Board

The Geological Survey and Mineral Resources Board is a component of the Ministry of the Oil and Minerals.  The predecessors to the GSMRB formed in the early 1970’s when there were several smaller entities dealing with various geological and minerals matters.  When Yemen unified in 1990 these entities amalgamated and after several name changes was established as the Geological Survey & Mineral Resources Board by republican decision number (317) for the year 1999.

   Responsibilities of the GSMRB

  1. Conducting geological surveying and the compilation of geological maps.

  2. Carrying out exploration work and preparation of the mineralogical maps.

  3. Undertaking studies and research concerning mineral resources.

  4. Concluding agreements for the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources    and supervising the activities of companies engaged in exploration and exploitation.

  5. Analysis and testing of mineral ores and industrial minerals.

  6. Issuing licenses for the investors in the field of mineral resources.

  7. Supervision of the widespread seismic station network.

  8. Data collection concerning earthquake activity and natural disasters through seismic studies and remote sensing.

  9. Promoting investment in the minerals sector.

  10. Provision of data and technical services to other State bodies.

  11. Monitoring, reporting and enforcement of environmental regulations in coordination with the Environment Protection Authority.

  12. Technical training programs for the employees of the Board.

  13. Assisting companies working in the minerals field to comply with Yemeni legal requirements.

  14. Development of relations with the Board’s authorities.

 Services of the Board

  • Prospecting for mineralization.

  • Testing of anomalies including logging core samples.

  • Geochemical analysis of major and trace elements by atomic absorption  and ultraviolet techniques.

  • Analysis of samples for radioactive elements by X-ray and mass spectrograph techniques.

  • Provision of earth science data and information contained within the GSMRB library.

  • Petrography studies.

  • Analyzing and interpreting aerial survey maps, electromagnetic survey maps

  • Cartographic department preparing geological and geophysical maps.

  • GIS department proficient in Arc View and Arc Map, interpretation using ERDAS.

  • Granting prospecting permits, exploration licenses and exploitation contracts for metallic minerals and industrial minerals.

  • Hydrogeological studies including water quality tests, flow rates, groundwater occurrence and dam locations.

  • Provision of geological information for  civil engineers.

  • Assessment of environmental impact of  mineral projects.

 Geological & Thematic Maps

As a result of several studies and geological research carried out by the Geological Survey and Mineral Resources Board (GSMRB), in cooperation with foreign missions, there are numerous types of maps available over the Republic of Yemen.  Geological, Topographic, Hydrogeological, Volcanic & Earthquake Hazard, Synoptic, Magnetic Anomaly, Radiometric, Potential Exploration Groundwater Resources and Thematic Maps are available in a scales varying from 1:50,000 to 1:1,000,000.

Geological Maps at a 1:100,000 scale

The GSMRB considers complete geological mapping of Yemen at a scale of 1:100,000 to be of utmost importance to stimulating mineral exploration.  This mapping commenced in 1990 with the assistance of the BGR and more recently the project has been taken over by the GSMRB.  To date 22 maps have been completed and a further 200 are in progress.

Thematic Maps in a scale of 1:50,000

A thematic map displays selected kinds of information relating to one or more specific themes, such as environment pollution, water management, soil, land-use, population density, and so on. These maps show the distribution of a wide variety of qualitative & quantitative information which can be used to guide sustainable development of ground and surface water, location of waste disposal sites, and land use planning. The GSMRB has compiled thematic maps on water pollution, oil station locations, quarries and crushers.
