Information Department

The Information department is one of the main departments at the general department of information in the Geological Survey and Mineral Resources Board (GSMRB). It consists of three sections as Data Bank, Maps & Aerial Photos & Library.

Aims of the Information Department

  • To Classify, consolidate and preserve the information & studies of the board.
  • To supply the researchers and the investors with the necessary information.
  • Issuing Current Awareness Bulletin.
  • Exchange information with the concerned sources locally and externally.

Data Bank

The data bank has a lot of technical reports, researches, specialized field studies and the final reports of geological survey for mineral, prospecting & exploring in Yemen, which has been done by GSMRB team, researchers or foreign companies. The department collected these data, classified and sorted them to become the main data base and produce the National bibliography which includes at present about 1300 titles. The investors and/or researchers can use these reports or data at the office or be can copy some of these documents after paying the fees .

Library

The library has been recently developed by supplying it with many specialized references. These references have been sorted and classified by subject and language so as to contain Arabic, English, French, German and Russian language in addition to some videotapes and CDS in English language. The library contains many scientific specialization, general books and periodicals. Presently there are about 3000 titles. The library managed to make a good relationship with some Arabic and Foreign libraries and is exchanging publications. It has also subscribed with some Earth science periodicals.

Maps & Aerial Photos Division

The GSMRB produced many specialized maps with different scales Topographical, Geological, Hydrogeological, Volcanic, Earthquake hazard, Geophysical Airborne magnetic maps and a synoptic map of the geology & mineral occurrences. These maps represent a wealth of technical data on the geology of Yemen. Each map series can be used independently or in compination so that for example the topographic map could be used together with the geologic or hydrogeologic, volcanic and magnetic because the scale for the products and layouts is the same. Other detail geological, topographical & geophysical (magnetic & radiometric) were produced with different scales. These maps were sorted & calssified according to its subject & scales in a bibliography for the main available maps. The investors and the researchers can get these maps after paying its coast or study them in the office .

The Main Available Maps

1 – Topographic Maps

The Topographic maps contain contours at zoom interval, drainage, population centers, sites of interest and the road network. It serves as useful source for definitive spellings of both Arabic place name and the English translation at scale of: -

1:000,000 (2 sheets)* , 1:250,000 (35 sheets)*

2 – Geological Maps

The geological maps shows the users how to define the existing region for the construction and industrial ores. They are used for comparison between the different basement areas. The history of the region is interpreting terms of plate tectonic theory with arc accretion resulting in the development of the Yemeni part of the Nubian-Arabian Shield at scale of: -

1:1000,000 (2 sheets)* , 1:250,000 (35 sheets)*

Scale of 1:250,000 (8 sheets) Published by the GSMRB with the cooperation of the German Project (BGR).

Scale of 1:100,000 (For some Southeastern area )

3 – Hydrogeological Maps

The Hydrogeological maps present information on the surface and the ground water in the broad context of geological and geomorphological framework provided by interpretation of the satellite images.

4 – Structural Map

The structure map of Yemen has been prepared manually on black and white imagery on a scale of 1:1,250,000 on one sheet*

5 – Geophysical Maps

  • Magnetic maps
  • Volcanic and Seismic Hazard Maps

The maps indicate the probability of occurrence of an earthquake or destructive volcanic activities at a particular place. The volcanic and seismic hazard maps should be regarded as preliminary since the data which is based on historically incomplete at scale of:- 1:1000,000 (2 sheets)*, 1:500,000 (8 sheets)*

cale of 1:250,000 (5 sheets for selected area)*

6 – Synoptic Map

Geological & Mineral occurrences map in one sheet with scale of 1:1000,000 *

Other product for geological & mineral occurrences was produced by cooperation with Russian team in two sheets with scale of 1:1000,000
